Are technology skills enough?

According to Mike Walker, Technology skills are not the only skills you need to be an EA. There are other skills that are essential, including:

Motivational – EAs must be able to motivate and inspire. A large part of the job is to influence or evangelize a set of ideals in the enterprise.

Negotiation – There will be times at the decision-making table when an EA must negotiate to get things accomplished. Most EAs are individual contributors and do not have organizational power.

Critical Thinking – Being able to think quickly and on your toes is often required.

Problem Solving – EAs often face a set of complex and unique problems, so they must be able to evaluate and solve problems.

Big Thinking – Avoiding tunnel vision and being able to look at a problem from multiple angles to test your own rationale is crucial to an EAs role.

Business savvy – Knowing the industry in which you work is essential, to help you understand how the technology can really affect the business. Being in tune with the business gives EAs much-needed credibility.

Process Orientation – Thinking in terms of process is essential for an EA. Building repeatable and reusable processes as both as artifacts from the work they do to how they work themselves.

People Skills – An EA’s job requires interacting with people constantly, so not having those skills could mean trouble.
